Welcome to Class 5
Our Class 5 teachers are Miss Petterson, Mr Forster and Mrs Smith.
Welcome to year 5.
“Welcome! Year 5 is a challenging, memorable and rewarding year for the children. We aim to provide pupils with a well-rounded, inspiring curriculum that prepares them for both the rigours of academic life and the world beyond the school gates. It can be hard work (for teachers as well as children!) but each day is different. I am excited to see what the rest of the year brings!”
The year 5 topics are very exciting! There is something for everyone. From Tudors to space to creating a garden in our allotment. I can’t wait to give the children the opportunity to experience and learn about new areas of the curriculum and watch them grow as they do.
Across this year we will be engaging in lots of exciting learning through the following topics:
- Off with her head
- Peasants, Princes and Pestilence
- Beast Creator
Our approach to homework is twofold. Firstly, we will set the pupils compulsory spelling, English and maths homework each week. Spellings will be handed out on a Monday and should be returned to school by Thursday. Spellings will be tested on a Friday. English and maths will be handed out on a Thursday and returned to school the following Tuesday. The year 5 teachers will be offering help with homework every Monday lunchtime, should your child have had any difficulties.
Secondly, children will be given additional and optional homework based on the topic we are studying in class. This will be project-based and sent out each half-term. We will give guidance on tasks the children can complete but we are happy for the children to use their initiative and come up with their own creative ideas. We look forward to showcasing these in the classroom and around school!
As well as completing homework activities, please help your child to read with you or someone in their family at least three times a week. Even good readers benefit from time sharing a book together and talking about their reading. And…it’s great fun! This will be monitored in class and children who are reading at least three times per week will be able to earn rewards. Rewards will also be given for those children who log on to reading plus at home and complete the online tasks.
For your information – PE lessons are every Thursday and Friday. Pupils will need to ensure they have appropriate footwear on these days and will not be allowed to participate if they cannot remove their jewellery themselves due to health and safety.

Please contact the school should you have any queries. As ever, thank you for your continued support.
