Welcome to Class 5
Our Class 5 teachers are Mrs Bostock and Mrs Smith.
Welcome to year 5.
Across this year we will be engaging in lots of exciting learning through the following topics:
- Off with her head
- Peasants, Princes and Pestilence
- Beast Creator
Further information about what we will be learning can be found in our curriculum section.
We have changed our approach to homework this year and hope you and your child really enjoy completing the tasks together. We no longer have a learning grid. Children will be asked to complete homework based on the topic we are studying in class. We will give guidance on tasks the children can complete but we are happy for the children to use their initiative and come up with their own homework tasks. We expect homework to be handed in across the term and will keep a record of this however we no longer have set days for this to be done. We aim to mark the homework and return it to the children as quickly as possible.
As well as completing homework activities, please help your child to read with you or someone in their family at least three times a week. Even good readers benefit from time sharing a book together and talking about their reading. And…it’s great fun! This will be monitored in class and children who are achieving three times per week will gain an extra playtime which will be awarded every Friday morning (where possible).
One of our key priorities this year is to improve our approach to teaching spelling. Your child will bring a list of spellings home every Wednesday which they should learn for the following Wednesday. A good way to learn spellings is to look carefully at the word, saying it out loud while thinking about the letters which make up the sounds in the word. They should then cover the word and have a go at writing it. They then check the word and think about where they might have made any mistakes. Keep doing this until they can spell the word correctly without thinking. Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check. We also encourage children to write their spellings into sentences which help them to understand the vocabulary.
For your information – PE lessons are every Monday and we go swimming on a Friday. Pupils will need to ensure they have appropriate footwear on these days.
